  1. Al Oerter retired from discus
  2. competition in 1969. He missed the
  3. 1972 and 1976 Olympics. But then
  4. he decided to come out of retire-
  5. ment. He resumed competition and
  6. set personal bests of 221' 4" in
  7. 1978 and 227' 11" in 1980. In 1980,
  8. Al was 43 -- and he still finished
  9. fourth at the national champion-
  10. ships!
